A key speaker at the BILD Edmonton Builder’s Breakfast, Kyle Oetiker from the Government of Alberta, shared valuable insights into ongoing safety initiatives and enforcement efforts around occupational health and safety (OH&S):

OH&S Blitz: Increased Compliance Through Increased Presence

Kyle introduced the OH&S Blitz, a targeted enforcement initiative within the residential sector. The goal? To improve compliance by increasing inspections and enforcement actions.
From January 1, 2025, to March 6, 2025, OH&S issued:
  • 21 tickets for safety infractions
  • 100% of these violations were related to Fall Protection
  • Total fines amounted to $70,000
This data highlights a significant concern in the industry—fall protection violations remain a top issue. This initiative is not ending anytime soon, and several builders in attendance confirmed they’ve noticed a greater OH&S presence on job sites.

Additional OH&S Areas of Concern

Beyond fall protection, OH&S has identified several recurring safety issues on residential job sites, including:
🚨 Lack of First Aid Kits & First Aid Training – Ensuring job sites are equipped with proper medical supplies and trained personnel is essential.
🚨 Missing or Inadequate Emergency Response Plans – Every site must have a clear, actionable plan for emergencies.
🚨 Unsafe Entry & Exit Points – Proper access routes help prevent trips, falls, and site congestion.
🚨 Missing Handrails & Guards – Critical for worker safety, especially at elevated work areas.
🚨 Absence of Prime Contractor Signage – Proper identification ensures accountability and compliance with site safety regulations.

What This Means for Builders & Contractors

With OH&S increasing enforcement, builders and contractors must take proactive steps to ensure compliance. Fall protection remains a key focus, but addressing the additional areas of concern will help reduce the risk of fines, site delays, and—most importantly—serious injuries.
As safety remains a top priority, staying informed and prepared is essential. If you haven’t already, now is the time to:
  • Review your safety policies
  • Ensure proper training and equipment are in place
  • Conduct internal audits to identify potential hazards
Let’s work together to create safer job sites for everyone.
