This new workshop provides knowledge and tools for anyone involved in the variance process – applicants, reviewers, and issuers. Participants will learn the purpose and benefits of variances, explore the safety codes system and the intent of code, and will apply tools to navigate the variance process so they are confident applying for or reviewing and issuing variances.

Partnership with the Alberta New Home Warranty Program, Professional Home Builders Institute, and Safety Codes Council.

  • Retired from the Government of Alberta in 2020 after 33 years of service. Director of Safety Assurance with Alberta Municipal Affairs that included Alberta New Home Warranty Program and Provincial Builders Licensing Program, as well as the Administrator of the Administrative Penalties Regulation.
  • Graduate of the U of A Executive Management Program
  • Worked with the Safety Codes Council to develop policies and procedures including orders and variances. Facilitating training courses for the Safety Codes Council since 2012.


The Council is an independent regulatory body made up of industry stakeholders and staff. We were formed in 1993 by the introduction of the Safety Codes Act to deliver programs on behalf of the government of Alberta.

Their Mission: Provide leadership by guiding, educating, supporting, and collaborating with all stakeholders in Alberta’s safety codes system.
